Providing Culturally Affirming Care
About the course
Foster parents can experience unique challenges when caring for children that have a different culture from their own. In this course, Patsy Wilkerson M.A. discusses how culturally affirming care is essential to developing healthy relations between foster parents and children. Topics discussed include the differences and similarities of various cultures, what social attitudes and individual characteristics influence cultural beliefs and values, and the role parents play in nurturing cultural opinions in children. Ms. Wilkerson encourages participants to create an open and positive dialogue with their foster children as a way to bond over their cultural differences and similarities. She also encourages foster parents to engage in behavior that is open and accepting of cultural differences and similarities for their children to model.
