This course, centered around the children's book Smelly Melly, offers foster parents practical activities to teach children healthy hygiene habits, as well as the health and social consequences of poor hygiene. It is intended for foster parents of preschool and early elementary-aged children. Smelly Melly may not be suitable for use with children who have experienced sexual abuse. Course objectives ?Recognize healthy hygiene habits. ?Learn age-appropriate activities for teaching children the importance of good hygiene habits.

This course is based on the DCFS Code of ethics for Child Welfare Professionals. The course presents specifics ethical standards of the Code. Examples and explanations are provided to demonstrate the appropriate application of each standards.

The sole purpose of this training is to educate caregivers about water safety measures, to reduce the incidence of water-related injury and death. Children of all ages, adults, and especially caregivers can practice the basic water safety measures outlined in this training to reduce the chances of a tragedy around water. Crystal Pichon, CEO of The Safety Place, reviews Louisiana laws and the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) policies pertaining to water safety and identifies the multiple layers of safety to utilize while in or around water. Note: this training is not a substitute for hands-on swim lessons, safety practices, active supervision, and the use of personal flotation devices.
