This training will increase skills and offer a framework for crisis response and de-escalation. The workshop will define the cycle of escalation, threat responses, the spectrum of ideation to intent, and the process of de-escalation. Participants will explore strategies to assess, respond, and de-escalate situations focused on direct practice settings and programs using hands-off approaches.
During this module participants will:
- Learn the foundational concepts of Motivational Interviewing and when to use this approach.
- Explore the specific skills and OARS technique of Motivational Interviewing (open-ended questions, affirmations, reflective listening, summarizing).
- Practice the skills of Motivational Interviewing applied to service provider scenarios.

This training offers a trauma-informed framework for navigating youth service milieus. It focuses on building skills for working with youth in community-based, residential, therapeutic, or educational settings. The training begins with an introduction to youth service milieus, then explores milieus through the framework of ?People, Structure, and Practices?. Topics include relationship building, boundaries, consistency, trauma informed milieus and general strategies for supporting milieus.
During this module participants will:
- Learn what a youth service milieu is and what functions milieus serve in youth development.
- Explore the youth service milieu framework of People, Structure, and Practices for an integrated understanding of milieus.
- Practice applying training strategies to youth service milieus.

Revisions to the Assessment of Family Functioning and Case Plan for Family Services and Foster Care
In effort to align with the Department?s seamless model of assessing safety throughout the life of a case on January 22, 2020, DCFS implemented the Child Welfare Assessment and Decision Making Model. This Model focuses on assessing Threats of Danger, Caretaker Protective Capacities and Child Vulnerability. During this training, case workers will be able to view changes to the Family Assessment Tracking System, known as FATS and how it aligns with the new model.
Course Objectives:
- To provide staff an overview of additions and revisions to the Assessment of Family Functioning and Case Plan.
- Identify the 3 domains of the Assessment of Family Functioning and Case Plan
- Introduce Conditions for Return, Conditions for Closure and Closing Summary.

Safe Sleep, Reducing the Risk of SIDS and SUID
In this course, participants will learn how to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID) using the ABC's of safe sleep. Presented by The Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services and the Calcasieu Parish Coroner's Office, participants will hear real SIDS and SUID cases from the field. Presenters will explain how applying the ABC's of safe sleep could have prevented each case. Also discussed are the risk factors of SIDS and SUID incidents and how these factors contribute to causing SIDS and SUID.

Safety Assessment Guidance for Supervisors and Managers
Supervisors will provide safety-focused guidance. This includes helping workers understand how child safety impacts assigned tasks, case prioritization, ensuring timely contacts, and gathering sufficient information for case decisions.
Goals:
Supervisors will be able to understand the difference between the impact of a safety threat versus a risk factor and how they impact the case differently
Supervisors will ensure that staff understand the difference between a Threat of Danger Identified - Crisis Safety Assessment and Programmatic Requirement Safety Assessment
Supervisors will be able to guide staff through the process of making informed safety decisions using Problem Based Learning model
