Child Welfare Supervisor Support and Capacity Building Program Module 1 - Preparing For Supervision
In Module 1, course content will focus on Emotional Intelligence, the "Four Tendencies", Parallel Process, and Principles of Practice #1. As a result of attending Module 1, attendees should observe a strengthening of their emotional intelligence level which assists with building relationships, maintaining a positive environment and displaying behaviors conducive for fellow employees and families. Attendees will have a better understanding of how their interactions with staff influence the interactions with staff and their clients; providing greater clarity of the significance of supervisors modeling behaviors, promoting a cohesive culture. Upon completion of Module 1, supervisors should have a plan for having their staff complete the "Four Tendencies" quiz (which assesses patterns of behavior/workplace functioning), as well as adjusting their supervision approach based on the test results for their unit members. Child Welfare Supervisor Support and Capacity Building Program Module 2 - Building Your Team
In Module 2, course content will focus on creating a stable and productive team and the DCFS CW Principle of Practice #2. Attendees will gain knowledge in the current hiring process for CW frontline staff. As a result of completing Module 2, attendees will be able to explain why people stay and leave DCFS as well as ways the supervisor can increase staff retention within their unit and the department. Attendees will have a better appreciation of the importance of worker orientation to the job and how they can create a sense of belonging within their unit. Attendees will be able to describe their role in staff training as well as be able to implement interventions to improve the staff's transfer of learning. Attendees will assess the cohesiveness of their team and will leave training with information on team building as well as ways to overcome problems within their units. Child Welfare Supervisor Support and Capacity Building Program Module 3 - Supervising and Supporting Your Team
In Module 3, course content is focused on supervising and supporting your team through the use of clinical, individual and group supervision as well as addressing the needs of supervisors and supervisees related to Secondary Traumatic Stress. In this course, supervisors should demonstrate an understanding of different supervision required with staff which includes providing guidance and supervision beyond just case consultation. Additionally, in this course supervisor's will learn that they should be thinking about how they can utilize group supervision in their units and develop a plan for their first group supervision meeting. This course also includes information on how supervisors should have an understanding of trauma and how it affects the families they serve and their staff. Lastly, in this course, supervisors will learn how to monitor staff for signs of secondary traumatic stress and begin to provide support to help combat negative consequences. Child Welfare Supervisor Support and Capacity Building Program Module 4 - Supervising for Safety and Permanency
In Module 4, course content is focused on supervising for safety and permanency through the use of critical thinking skills. In this course, supervisors should demonstrate an understanding of critical thinking and its relationship to outcomes of safety, permanence, and well-being. They should be able to discuss how the parallel process applies to the use of critical thinking in an agency and how the use of critical thinking supports Louisiana DCFS PIP. Supervisors will also be able to discuss the Child Welfare Assessment and Decision Making Model and how they plan to promote a culture of safety within their unit. They will be able to use their critical thinking skills during case staffing with their workers and when reviewing case documentation to ensure staff assess safety on an ongoing basis and staff make case decisions by integrating data from their observations, collaterals, case records, and other sources. Supervisors will be able to recognize the common problem areas with CWADM implementation and develop a plan to improve in this area. Supervisors will be able to discuss how permanency relates to all CW programs (Prevention, Preservation and Permanency for FC) and the importance of timely permanency for all children being provided services through DCFS. They will be able to describe evidence-based approaches associated with timely and lasting permanency (relative placement, frequent visitation, siblings placed together and children placed in or close to parish of removal). Child Welfare Supervisor Support and Capacity Building Program Module 5 - Respectful Accountability-The Role of the Supervisor
In Module 5, course content will focus on the supervisor's role in using data to guide best practice and holding the unit accountable for performance though the use of respectful accountability. In this course, supervisors should demonstrate an understanding of the importance of a results-oriented culture in child welfare and their role in creating a results-oriented culture. Supervisors will be able to address their worker's concerns and fears about using data. Supervisors will be able to establish group and individual goals and objectives and hold their unit accountable for performance using respectful accountability. Supervisors will be able to provide clear expectations to staff and develop a plan for addressing performance outcomes. Supervisors will be able to demonstrate their understanding of general HR process and basics of documentation as well as general guidelines of FMLA. Child Welfare Supervisor Support and Capacity Building Program Module 6 - Supervising as Leaders in the Agency and Community
In Module 6, the content will focus on leading in context, the supervisor's role in working with the environment beyond the unit, and cultural humility, working with and learning from people from different cultures. Supervisors will be able to describe the key role of the supervisor at the intersection of the unit and the external environment. They will be able to describe the importance of the supervisor's leadership role in assessing collaboration in the environment beyond the unit. Supervisors will be able to apply a systems perspective to develop an eco-map of key partners in their unit's environment. Supervisors will be able to apply leadership concepts of shared values and vision, and technical and adaptive change to assess key partnerships in the unit's external environment. Supervisors will be able to describe the importance of the supervisor's leadership role in assessing collaboration in the environment beyond the unit. Supervisors will demonstrate an understanding of the cultural humility perspective and will leverage diversity within their unit and the department. They will demonstrate an understanding of the importance of learning from people they interact with and reserving judgment. Supervisors will demonstrate an understanding of concrete strategies to help promote recognition and valuing of cultural differences at the interpersonal and agency level. There will be a presentation from the university partners and the training academy as well as state office programs of media, home development, and ICPC.
