Autism 101
Module One: Autism 101 In this moodule, participants will explore autism spectrum disorder, also known as ASD, and the learner will gain critical insights into its characteristics and implications. Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reveals that approximately 1 in 44 children in the United States is diagnosed with autism, a figure that illuminates the rising occurrence of this developmental condition among children. This information not only reflects the growing awareness and recognition of autism but also emphasizes the importance of understanding its impact on individuals and families. Through this course, learners will journey to enhance their knowledge and strategies to support people affected by ASD. Module Two: Unpacking Ableism In this module, we will explore the concept of ableism. Ableism about autism involves discrimination and prejudice against autistic individuals. This often stems from societal expectations favoring neurotypical behaviors and abilities. This course aims to raise awareness about autism and address ableism to better support autistic individuals. Module 3 - Neurodivergent Affirming Caregiving In this final module, neurodivergent-affirming caregiving acknowledges and celebrates neurodivergent individuals' unique strengths and experiences. Instead of concentrating on deficits or trying to "normalize" them, this approach emphasizes creating environments and providing support that respect individual differences.
